This journey began in 2003, when Uryadi’s Village Founder Jennifer Crooks, traveled with her husband Mike, and her family (already consisting of five children, Lauren 17, Sean, 15, Catherine 11, Ciara 7, and Hunter, 6) to China to adopt her daughter Sophie (14 months). It was there that Jennifer’s eyes were opened for the first time to the sad plight of orphaned children in developing countries around the world. Walking into that rural orphanage, where the most basic needs of the children were barely being met, Jennifer’s world-view changed in an instant. She was immediately overwhelmed by a burning and heart-felt desire to create change, and to make a real and lasting contribution toward improving the care and quality of life for such vulnerable children worldwide.
Jennifer founded Uryadi’s Village in 2014 to help the vulnerable children and families who are struggling to survive in rural Ethiopia. Many families of the children you see here do not give them up because they are not loved. It is the opposite. They are loved so much that the family would rather their child be placed where they can receive what they need in order to survive. There is also the reality that orphan rates continue to increase with poverty, and disease, both of which are a constant struggle in Ethiopia. Children with special needs are often believed to be cursed and therefore abandoned. This is a belief that Uryadi’s Village is dedicated to change. Each and every child is special and deserves love and care, some just came into this world a little different. However, we believe different is good and beautiful.
“Having spent months on the ground in Ethiopia arranging for the adoption of my first three Ethiopian children, learning about many of the deep seated problems orphaned children face, and being with the amazing Ethiopian people: it became very clear that Ethiopia was the place to start.”
99 and counting…
As of April 2024, Uryadi’s Village is home to 99 children, whose care we are responsible for in every way - safety, security, food, education, care, and of course, love!
Our Specialized Focus
Many of our children have unique needs that require specialized care. Over the years, we have developed a better understanding of our local community and its strengths and challenges. This growing understanding and knowledge has informed our ongoing development and areas of focus. We have gradually intensified and finetuned our focus on children with special needs, as this is the area where we see the biggest lack of available resources. There are many wonderful programs serving the orphaned and vulnerable children of Ethiopia, which we feel closely allied with. To our knowledge, we are the only project that is focused on ensuring that children with a diverse range of needs are considered equal members of the community, and are included in every part of life.
Every child is worthy
We are committed not only to caring for children with special needs, but to creating a community where ALL children are fully integrated into Village life. Ensuring that our children with special needs are part of our whole village, and are not excluded or isolated, is extremely important to us.
This focus has become more clear with every passing year, and as we near our 10th anniversary, we feel strongly that our calling is to serve the children of Ethiopia who are orphaned and vulnerable, especially those with special needs, in a holistic, inclusive environment, because every child is worthy.
Unique & Creative Solutions to All Needs
By building our own capacity to serve the unique needs of each child in our care, most of whom would not have access to what they need anywhere else, we are offering them the chance to grown and develop in ways that would not be possible otherwise. We have great team in place, including a staff Physical Therapist and specially trained caregivers who work every day to ensure that every child in our care has what they need to thrive no matter how specialized their needs are.
Community Ripple Effect
Refining our focus this way offers a very special opportunity for us to have a truly lasting, positive impact. Our focus impacts not only individual children who come into our care, but also families in our community, and the community itself. Through education, resources, and our family sponsorship program, we offer our community an alternative perspective around what is possible for those with unique needs.
The Uryadi’s Village Team is united, both on site in Soddo, and across the globe, by our dedication to and passion for serving our children, and our community.
Uryadi’s Village is growing and evolving all the time, and always striving to provide a more holistic approach to the growth and healing of the beautiful children we serve.
