Although Uryadi’s Village is an international organization, being deeply connected and rooted in our local community is one of our core values. We are committed to opportunity and empowerment, to working together with our neighbors and friends to nurture the vibrant, thriving culture and community that already exists in Soddo. We are not rescuers, but rather partners. Our project as a whole, and all the individual smaller projects that make it up, have come about as a result of the community reaching out and asking for our participation and input in co-creating solutions and projects that solve challenges and enhance life for our entire neighborhood.
Everything we do, we do together, as partners, and in community.
The local community approached us and asked if we would be interested in sponsoring a youth football (aka, soccer, for those of us in the US!) team for the community’s young men.
We were all in! Our boys already have a great love of football, and we know the many benefits athletic programs have for kids of many ages. To be able to help our local community, as well as our boys, have access to a real football team, with coaches, uniforms, and all the things that a football team needs to be successful, was an amazing opportunity.
We were fortunate to find some very generous donors, Bill and Linda Potter, who are funding this program. We are so excited to be able to ensure that our boys, and the other boys and young men of our neighborhood in Otona have access quality recreational programs.
Our boys youth football team is currently training, competing, and growing in skill, strength, and stamina with every practice.
Just as we were getting our boys youth team up and running, the idea was presented to create a girls youth football team. We weren’t sure how much interest there would be for this, but it turned out there was A LOT!!! So, after some conversation with Bill and Linda Potter, and their daughter Wendi McKenna, together raised the money to fund this program, which may very well be the first of it’s kind in our area.
We currently have over 40 girls signed up to play on the girls football team, including quite a few of our girls from the village. They have started regular practices, and are showing how much they want to be out on the field playing, learning, and building their skills. They have their own uniforms, along with an abundance of energy and enthusiasm.
We can’t wait to see where this team goes!
