A vital part of Uryadi’s Village mission has been to work in partnership with the local people to create a model village for orphaned children that will ultimately be self-sustainable and thus not completely reliant on foreign aid. We are now a family of 93 children in the Village. We have 20 children in loving foster homes, support over 100 children in our local School Sponsorship Program, and we are proud to share that we have now placed 70 children with loving local adoptive families.
Having been asked by the local government to grow and expand our Village and services, Phase 2 construction that was due to begin in 2020 but was delayed by the pandemic, began in July of 2021. Fast forward to 2023 and we have completed our community building, the first building to go up on our new land. This building houses a medical clinic, a physical therapy clinic, a library and computer room, two classrooms, and handicapped accessible showers and bathrooms, and our Montessori School. We have also completed our perimeter fence which is both culturally relevant and adds to security, as well as a new children’s home! The children’s home is a huge step for us in staying true to our mission of providing family style living for our children. Three more children’s homes are designed and ready to be built, as soon as we secure the funding. In addition to the three family style homes, we hope to also build an animal barn for our growing herd of livestock.
This expansion work increases our ability to serve our children and for the future children that will come through our doors. Through collaboration of international experts and local community leaders, our Village is thriving. It is our hope that this village will be an example that can not only save children's lives and empower the local people in Soddo Ethiopia, but whose success and inspiration can be replicated around the world.
Produces nearly all of its own food through kitchen gardens, integrated perennial food systems, animal husbandry, and aquaculture, that is culturally and ecologically appropriate.
Ensures clean, available water through tangible filtration systems, rainwater catchment, greywater, and water saving earthworks.
Meets its power needs from renewable energy systems including solar panels and back-up generators, as well as using efficient systems to mitigate power use from the start.
Educates and supports children with special needs, both within the Village and beyond, helping to create a culture of support and love for every child.
Stimulates the local economy through hiring all local employees, buying supplies locally, and creating our own community co-op.
An Integrated, Sustainable COMMUNITY
The Village currently consists of 4 family homes and a 2 baby homes for the babies in our local adoption program. Surrounding the Family homes is a Central Courtyard Area, Community Kitchen & Gathering Area, and Guest House. The progress made on phase two includes the completion of the perimeter fence, first of four more family homes, a physical therapy center, an education building, a proper medical clinic, a soccer field, Montessori and other features in the community building. Three children’s homes, a library and computer center, and animal barn are still in need of funding. Once the funding is secured, we are ready to build.
Through all of this growth, we focus more then ever on uplifting the mobility of children with special needs, as well as community gathering areas, increased space for sustainable agriculture and food forests, and appropriate technology systems which support the Village at large.
It is our hope and intention that the Uryadi’s Village can not only care for the needs of our children, but also empower the local people in Soddo, Ethiopia in a way that supports self-resiliency and decreases dependence on foreign aid- and that it can become a thriving model which can be replicated elsewhere in Ethiopia, Africa, and around the world.
